topic: 'Seeing Beyond' exhibition... 23 January - 5 April

Henshaws
Posts 1
Hi guys... I work for Henshaws Society for Blind People in the north of England. Some of our 'Arts and Galleries Group' members have recently collaborated with renowned artist Eric Fong to raise awareness of issues relating to art and visual impairments.

I've got invitations to the preview on Thursday 22 January, if anyone is interested? Call me on 0161 872 1234 and I can send them in the post.

Here's some more info from the press release.

The exhibition features a film documenting the experiences of three visually impaired people, a guide dog and an audio describer visiting another art exhibition.

Eric, a former medical doctor says: “The project explores how visual impairment affects access to art and examines the gap between seeing, hearing and understanding.”

Margaret Wilson has diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, with no sight in her left eye and minimal sight in her right eye. Margaret says: “My family and friends find it strange that I can enjoy art. It will be interesting to see how Eric’s film challenges these perceptions.”

Henshaws Art Galleries & Museums group also gave Christine Gregory a new lease of life when she joined five years ago, after losing her sight through the condition retinitis pigmentosa.

With no sight at all, Christine explores art in very different ways: “I like to find out about the artist and their thinking behind the piece. The interesting thing is, that everyone in the group creates a different pictures in their minds.”

Christine’s guide dog, Shane, also plays a role in the work. A mini-cam attached to his collar recorded his perspective; Eric then digitally manipulated the footage to simulate canine vision.

Seeing Beyond features at the Chinese Arts Centre from 23 January to 5 April 2009. Visitors on the day of the launch will also be able to gain an understanding of conditions like glaucoma and cataracts, by trying on special simulation spectacles and other materials provided by Henshaws.

Audio guides to the artwork will be available for both visually impaired and sighted visitors.

For Christine and Margaret, Henshaws have made sure that sight loss isn’t a barrier to enjoying art, and to be involved so closely in the project was a unique experience. Christine said, “I enjoy art so much, so it is amazing to be part of an exhibition like Eric’s.”

Seeing Beyond, Chinese Arts Centre - 23 January to 5 April 2009.

I'm not new to the art world, but have recently graduated from the University of WI-Milwaukee in the US. I'm an artist that has been creating and selling touchable art. I couldn't make art other way, but touchable. I'm looking for more artists who have the same thoughts about art as I do. Art should be for everyone. I've shown my work in various galleries, children museums, and the WI Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired, along with other venues dedicated to showing and promoting artwork done for and by the blind and visually impaired community. I plan on creating awareness on art done in this manner because it deserves to be recognized. My website will be up in March 2009. Let's do this. Please let me know if anyone is interested.

Hello, my name is Moon Leith and I am a third year Photography student studying in Bristol. I am currently focusing my research on the prevalant world of Visually Impaired Photographers. I have gathered so much information I am practically drowning in it, but have a limited amount that is from a personal perspective.

I have compiled a list of questions because they relate to my work and cannot be answered by books or the internet. If you have a spare 10 minutes I would very much appreciate your answers, please get in touch if you are interested.

There is also the possibility of joining my 'mini collective project' which is generating some great stuff from people involved, and which I am very excited about.

Go on, get involved!

Thank you!

I thought it looked like a carrot in a sink, I'm not saying that is a bad thing. I can also see half a face. that's my perception. I often 'see' all kinds of wierd and wonderful images that a 20\20 individual might never percieve. Our brain can only interpret the information that our eyes pass on to it
( am suprised at the lack of replies on this site per the amount of views. Doesn't anyone have anything to say about the work they see? maybe i'll put that to a wider forum. good luck

Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month: October 2008

“MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE”:
ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AND ACCESSIBLE ARTS

For its third Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month, the Albuquerque Museum offered a feast for the senses by bringing together the performing and visual arts and art history: showcasing music and poetry by children and adults with vision loss, touch tours of the museum’s sculpture garden, and a demonstration on woodblock printing by artist Mary Sweet.

“More than Meets the Eye” was a collaborative between The Albuquerque Museum, the New Mexico Commission for the Blind, the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), New Mexico, and VSA North Fourth Art Center. After working separately with each institution, Elizabeth Becker, Associate Curator of Education, explained that “it made sense to bring us all to the table to share our resources.”

Among participating artists were Jennifer Espinosa (poet) and Kevin Lord (singer), both from VSA Day Arts Program; Kelly Burma (singer) and Caroline Benavidez (guitar and voice), from the NFB; and Voices de Oro, members of the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired choir.

Kevin Lord, who warmed up the crowd with songs by the Rolling Stones and David Bowie, says, “Joining on stage and singing over the microphone was great!”

The touch tours, along with bringing a multi-sensory approach, took on a fun turn as, while listening to water hitting the ground from one of the sculptures that interprets a desert rain storm, someone decided to splash water on the children, who welcome it joyfully on such a hot day.

TOUCHABLE PAINTINGS

The Bureau of Braille and Talking Book Library Services in Daytona Beach, Florida, welcomed artist Diane L. Bradley of St. Augustine at its first of three special art events this month. Ms. Bradley presented several of her paintings that, thanks to her rich use of impasto, could be enjoyed both by sight and by touch.

“I love the freedom of not being locked into one style, subject matter, or medium. My philosophy is that art should be FUN: My work is colorful and energetic. My hope is the viewer will get as much pleasure looking at it as I did creating it,”
says Ms. Bradley, who holds an MA degree from Nazareth College, Rochester, New York. (You can see more of artist’s work at: www.dianebradleyart.com <http://www.dianebradleyart.com/> .)

Such positive feedback encouraged the library to include a list of arts and blindness books in its monthly newsletter. Since then, the library has received more than 1,000 requests for these items.

The library’s other Awareness Month programs also feature artist: painter Susan Sims Morrison (Morrison has posted on the Web a fascinating story about her participation in a tactile art show
http://island11.wordpress.com/2008/02/25/the-journey-follow-up-story-of
-a-painting-life-and-art-lessons-learned) and master jeweler and silversmith Ernest "Harvest" Martino.

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING?

Go to www.artbeyondsight.org <http://www.artbeyondsight.org/> and click “calendar” (bottom of homepage) for a list of public activities being presented this month – including the Monday, October 27, Telephone Conference Crash Course, featuring experts from across the country.
